Arcana hadn’t shown up in the Great Hall for dinner, though she doubted anyone had really noticed. The brunette was the kind of person who was undoubtedly noticed when she was present, but if she wasn’t, no one would think much of it. It wasn’t that she was easily forgettable or some nobody no one was aware even existed, because the young girl knew quite a few people around her, but she wasn’t a dominating person and was rarely the center of attention. Anyway, on the off chance that anyone had noticed, they would probably dismiss it by supposing she was studying for a test or daydreaming or something of the sort. That was useful at times like these. Deep down, she knew she ought to be eating, but she just couldn’t bring herself to do so right now. The thought of food was disgusting, and she felt as though she had already put on enough weight to make up for what she lost. She was almost well now, so it couldn’t matter that much if she skipped a meal every once in a while.
Sitting curled up in an armchair, her light brown eyes were fixed at the fire in front of her. There was no need for her to worry about the Transfigurations assignment, since she had completed it the day it had been handed out, and there was no point in her reading through the pages they were supposed to read for Potions tomorrow one more time. That left her with pretty much nothing to do, especially with the decision to skip dinner, so the petite girl simply sat there, studying the dancing flames in the fire. It was a beautiful sight, really, and the warmth and coziness was comforting now that it was getting colder outside. Snow would start falling any day now. Arcana didn’t mind, though – that would just cause her to devote even more time and effort to schoolwork, even though most people agreed she was already obsessive about it. Achieving good grades was important to her, though, and she intended to ace all her N.E.W.Ts and earn all O’s. Nothing less would be good enough.
Maybe she was just going crazy, pushing herself as hard as she did, but she needed to prove herself. Her brother had always been favored by their parents (it felt like that, anyway), and she had always felt as though, in order to gain their favor, she would have to be nothing less than perfect. Perfection wasn’t easy, though, especially not in a world where she would be constantly surrounded by veela, metamorphmagi and just generally magical prodigies. There were times when the young Ravenclaw honestly wished she could have been born a squib, but the thought would always fade from her mind as quickly as it had arrived. That would only have made her feel worse, and caused the Lovegood family much grief and disappointment. Upsetting her family was the last thing in the world she would ever want to do, and the very antithesis of her primary goal in life. They would be proud of her the day she graduated with top grades and became an expert Auror.
Looking away from the fire, she heard the sound of people talking. Dinner was probably over by now, since the voices seemed to be coming from the Great Hall. Sitting perfectly still, she waited to see if anyone else intended to go into the Group Commons today. A lot of people had friends mostly within their own house, so the Group Commons were generally less popular than their respective common rooms, but it was a nice place nonetheless, as some had noticed. She wasn’t sure whether she wanted the room to be filled or not, as she had been quite content to sit staring into the flames, lost in her own private world, but on the other hand, it would be nice to have someone to talk to. Arcana was a social creature, after all, and being on her own for too long at a time would probably drive her absolutely insane.
